AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companions

Program Overview

The Senior Companion Program is a program of AmeriCorps Seniors that Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio has administered since 1968. Men and women 55 and over serve older adults to enrich their lives, empower them to remain independent in their homes and provide respite to family caregivers.

Services Offered

Senior Companions provide non-medical support to seniors, veterans, and adults with developmental disabilities in their homes and independent‑living settings, such as:

  • Socialization
  • Assistance with meals
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping
  • Safety checks
  • Transportation
  • Sharing common interests and forming lasting connections

Eligibility

To become a Senior Companion, you must be 55 or older and meet income requirements.
You must also pass all required background checks.

Single Income

A single person’s income can’t be more than $31,920.

Two-person Income

A two-person income can’t be more than $43,280.

Senior Companions typically serve at least 15 hours per week. Volunteers are on assignment Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. No weekends, holidays or overnights. 

Yes, Senior Companions receive a modest tax-free stipend, as well as 40 hours of paid orientation, paid personal time, supplemental insurance, and 12 paid holidays.

Yes, Senior Companions receive mileage reimbursement or bus fare reimbursement.

No, income earned will not impact your eligibility for SSI, SSDI, housing or other programs.
