Position Summary

Provide substantive legal immigration services to Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio (CCSWO) clients eligible for Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) services under the supervision of the ILS Director. This position will work collaboratively with staff from both Immigration Legal Services and the Refugee Resettlement Department.  The Immigration Advocate will carry an individual caseload and will be primarily responsible for the management of cases, including case deadlines, drafting and submitting client’s applications and petitions for immigration benefits, collecting client information and maintaining the confidentiality of client information, and communicating with clients regarding their cases.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assume primary responsibility for the legal representation of refugees, asylees, Cuban/Haitian entrants, Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders, Amerasians and survivors of trafficking in their applications for immigration benefits, including adjustment of status, employment authorization, and naturalization, as needed and under the supervision of an Immigration Attorney/ILS Director.
  2. Provide refugee families with information on permanent resident status and family reunification procedures.
  3. Guide clients through the legal process for applying for immigration benefits and assist clients in navigating the various government agencies responsible for reviewing and approving applications for immigration benefits.
  4. Assist clients applying for adjustment of status with gathering documentation to complete medical exam requirements and work with the Civil Surgeon when necessary to facilitate the medical exam process.
  5. Identify and adhere to case deadlines, including deadlines to file applications for benefits and submit responses to Requests for Evidence.
  6. Work with clients from diverse backgrounds on the aforementioned applications and petitions for immigration benefits.
  7. Collect and maintain confidentiality of client documents and information required for filing for immigration benefits.
  8. Follow case management systems for individual caseload in line with CCSWO policies and procedures.
  9. Draft, organize, and finalize aforementioned applications for immigration benefits for CCSWO clients.
  10. Communicate regularly with clients to keep them informed of the case process and major developments in the case.
  11. Communicate regularly with other team members in ILS, the Immigration Attorney/ILS Director and Refugee Resettlement Director regarding assigned cases.
  12. Work in an interdisciplinary team environment to further the mission of the ILS Department and the work of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio.
  13. Participate in 3-4 legal clinics/trainings per year as required by the ILS Director.
  14. Carry an active caseload as directed by supervisor.
  15. Submit monthly reports to ILS and RRS Director.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills Requirements:

  1. A bachelor’s degree preferably in legal studies, paralegal studies, or a related field.
  2. Two to three (2-3) years of case management experience.
  3. Fluent in written and oral English.
  4. Familiarity with computer systems, including Microsoft Office suite, Office 365, SharePoint, and legal case management programs.
  5. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  6. High energy and passion for Catholic Charities’ mission.
  7. State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License that meets CCSWOH current carrier guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Fluent in written and oral Spanish, French, Swahili, Arabic, or Tigrinya.
  2. Prior immigration law or office experience.
  3. Experience working with refugee populations.

Work Environment:

Typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues.
